How To Check My Email

Introduction

Checking my email is a good way to stay in close contact with friends and associates. Most people have several email accounts they are actively managing. In order to check your email, there are a few steps you must take. After accessing your email for the first time, you will be able to do so in the future with ease. By checking your email on a regular basis, you can ensure that you do not miss any important messages. My email messages are available to read at any time of the day from any computer with an active Internet connection.

Step 1

Open a Web browser on your computer. There are several browsers available to use including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari. An icon to quickly launch the browser is often made available in the taskbar of your computer. If not, select it from the Start menu.

Step 2

Type the URL address of the site on which you have your email. The URL address includes the domain name. For instance, if my email is a Yahoo email address, the website would be www.yahoo.com. If you are unsure of the URL for your email provider, perform an online search to determine the site address. Any online search can provide you with the information you need to access your email's site. For instance, a search for my email through Yahoo is quickly obtained on popular search engines such as Bing and Google.

Step 3

Enter your user name and password in the fields indicated. The user name is commonly the part before the “@” symbol. For instance, if my email address is abc@yahoo.com, the user name is the “abc” portion of the email address. Some providers, such as Hotmail, require you to entire your entire email address before you can access your email. The password is usually case-sensitive. If you are unable to remember my email address, click the “Forgot Password” option and follow the on-screen steps to reset your email password.

Step 4

Click “OK” or “Submit' to view your email. Depending on the email provider, you will be taken to your inbox or another startup page. If my email provider is Yahoo, the startup page will feature links to top stories on Yahoo. If my email provider is Gmail, the inbox will be displayed first. Click “Inbox” in the top or side menu to view my email.

Step 5

Click on the first email message you want to view. The email message will be displayed in its entirety unless there is an attachment. An attachment is a file such as a document or picture that was attached or added to the email. To read the attachment in my email, click “Download Attachment.” The attachment will be scanned for viruses and displayed on the screen when the download completes.

Tips

If you have forgotten the user name to your email account, click “Forgot User Name” and follow the prompts to retrieve your user name.

After checking your email, log out of the account if you are not the only one that has access to the computer. When left open, your personal emails are available for anyone with access to the computer to read.
