Introduction
Before discussing the nitty gritty of transferring a domain name to a different web host, we need to say what it is exactly when we use the term domain transfer. That said, a domain transfer is the process through which a domain is transferred in terms of storage and demonstration of a domain from one web hosting provider to another. This may require a couple of additions such as the transfer of files and assigning them to appropriate name servers. There is also the domain forwarding, which is the redirection of traffic from one domain to another. This should not be confused with domain transfer. The transfer of domains comes with the transfer of all files from the old web server to the new one. This can be dangerous in that data and be lost the down time can be experienced in the site if it is not done properly. This should be a sober consideration before partaking in the transfer of domain name to a different web host process. When transferring a domain name to a different host, it is important to note that domain name transfer of registration policy states that a registered name holder must be able to transfer a domain name to another registrar. This is a fairly east process; what makes it complicated is if it is not done with proper understanding of the process.
How to do it
You need to first of all decide on what exactly you want your website to do and how you want to look as design. After that you can proceed to back up your website. This is very important. This includes the scripts you might have added to your web’s functionality in the course of time. If you are using FrontPage, the command to do this is the import feature. If you are using DreamWeaver, on the other hand, use the get command. This will enable you to copy everything. After doing this, you will then proceed to transfer you domain name to another web host. This is done by giving a numerical code to the first and the second server. After this, all that remains is the uploading of your website.
After moving
After moving, you should keep track of your old account for a couple of weeks in order to check the traffic on this old site. Also, go through the new site and make sure that things appear as you had desired them to. Test that all the services work on this new provider. Do not forget to put a sign to communicate your move to your customers. After this, goodbye oldie and hello newbie.
How long does it take?
This is an important question which also serves as a measure of effectiveness of the whole process as well. The whole domain transfer process can actually be done and completed in a day. However, if your site contains a lot of files, then the process can take a tad bit longer. Also, the larger your site, the longer it will take to create the backup and upload the files.
