Introduction
Bird kill is an incident that is confined to a particular area consequentially leading to the death of a great number of birds all at once. Such deaths of animals on such a massive scale is not something strange or bizarre, that is how nature works. There could be a range of reason for this sort of an incident including epidemic diseases, bad weather, along with pollution and climate change. Imagine taking a peaceful walk at midnight or going for a stroll in the garden to inhale some fresh morning breeze and suddenly thousands of birds fall from the sky. What you would have witnessed would be a bird kill incident which could have been triggered by one or more of the numerous reasons of such incidents happening. It is not only climate and nature that kill these birds; humans and humans’ inventions also lead to killing of many birds for example, pesticides, communication towers, wind farms and pollution. Individual birds killed by construction buildings, cats or other reasons do not really come under the category of a bird kill because this concept is solely used for the massive killing of birds simultaneously.
History
We cannot track the pre-historic examples of such incidents because in those times people were alien to this concept. The world has started taking notice of such events since the year 2004. Uptil now we have abundant examples of where and when a bird kill event took place for example, Taizhou in China (2004), Franklin Township of Somerset County in New Jersey (2009), Beebe, Arkansas in USA (2010) and Falköping in Sweden (2011). Time and time again people have been criticising the use of materials, equipment and poisons that lead to such brutal events which cannot even be controlled. Ironically, nowadays, the rising criticism is against the “Green, Environment Friendly” Wind farms that generate the so-called green wind power. There have been numerous occasions at which hundereds and even thousands of migrating birds have been killed by windmills. Added reasons includes low visibility at night or during bat weather and the steady-burning lights which catch birds’ attention and disorient them.
Features
The human factors causing such events can be abated resulting in a lesser amount of bird kill incidents from taking place. It is dreadful to see that on one hand we recognize and promote animal rights but, sadly enough, on the other hand we are not doing much efforts to curb the events which lead to massive killing of birds. We try hard to protect the endangered species but we ourselves are letting so many animals to die and consequently reaching that level where these animals would come under the endangered species’ category.
Tips and comments
People must be made aware about such massive killings and raise their voices in opposition to such gruesome acts against the animal kingdom. Measures should be taken to curb the events leading to the incidents of Bird Kill. We must protect birds and prevent the remaining species of bird from becoming endangered species and consequently becoming extinct.
