Introduction
Making a birdcage can be a fun and unique way to put your artistic talents to a good use. Whether you have a bird, or just want to make your own personalized birdcage for the fun of it, it's a great way to be artistic, creative and have a little project to work on.
Step 1
Make A Plan:
When building anything, you'll want to have a plan! A birdcage can come in many different shapes and sizes, so it is important to have a layout drawn out so you know where to begin and have a clear idea of what the final result will look like.
Step 2
Gather All Required Tools:
Once you have a plan drawn out for your birdcage, the next step is to gather all the required tools. Some tools you may need are as follows:
- uprights
- fir strips
- rail pieces
- glue
- nails
- paint
- wiring
- staple gun
Step 3
Begin With the Frame:
The very first step to building a birdcage is to get the frame completed first and foremost. You will want to sand down the wood pieces before beginning to build the frame as you don't want splinters occurring. It is often suggested to avoid a lot of metals (as they are toxic to birds), so you may want to use a sturdy glue gun to put together the frame.
Step 4
Add the Wire:
Once you've designed and put together the frame for the birdcage, it is not the time to add the wiring. Make sure the wire is cut evenly and that it fits tightly around the entire frame. Attach the wire to the outside of the entire frame, not the inside. Attaching the wire to the outside, makes sure that your bird will not be harmed by any of the wiring. You should use a staple gun when attaching wire.
Step 5
Add the Door:
To build a birdcage, you'll need to add a door to the cage. Make sure the door to the birdcage is wide enough for entrance. You also will want the door to be stern and gap free, as it could cause your bird to escape if there are any wide gaps in between the door. You will also want to make sure you add a wooden frame around the door, before adding on the door.
Where to Go to Get the Materials
In order to get all the proper materials for a successful hand made birdcage, you'll want to visit your local Home Depot, Lowes or any hardware store similar to those two. You can purchase all the materials for a birdcage, for under $20.00. It is a very inexpensive thing to build. Also, remember, if you want to pain your birdcage or add color to it externally, you'll need to buy paint and design materials. You can get these materials at any art store like Micheal’s Hobby Shop or even Walmart, in the arts and supplies section.
Tips
If building a birdcage for an actual bird, take into consideration the actual size of the bird. You'll want a bigger cage if you have a bigger bird, but a smaller cage should suffice for a smaller breed of bird.
