Introduction

Mental health is a very important issue in today's society. This is because there are so many people suffering from a variety of mental health issues that can range from mild to debilitating. Some studies report that as many as 1 out of 3 people may suffer from some sort of mental health issue and the majority of them suffer in silence because, despite the prevalence of mental health issues, many people still don't want to admit that they think they have a problem and will not seek mental health treatment.

There is still a stigma attached to mental health and this could be for a variety of reasons. Some people assume that is they reveal their status, they will be thought of as crazy and this can keep them from seeking mental health treatment. Another reason could be the stigma attached to the treatments alone. We know that the mental health treatment of years past was probably more harmful than helpful but today, medical advances and more advanced knowledge of mental health issues means the mental health treatment one receives will be tailored towards their personality, their unique problem and their overall health.

It is very important that anyone who thinks they may have some sort of mental illness seek mental health treatment in order to be able to live full and enjoyable lives. Not seeking treatment could make the problem worse. The first person you should talk to if you are unable to talk to a close friend or family member, is your doctor and they will refer to someone who specializes in the field and can provide you with the proper mental health treatment.

Counseling is probably the first thing that someone who thinks they have a problem will be referred to. Counseling is great because it allows to sufferer to get out their feelings and symptoms and have them analyzed by a professional. This can help determine if the illness is caused by a traumatic event in the person's past or a physical problem in the brain itself.

Talking it out could help and if it resolves the issue, it can save the patient from having to take drugs to deal with the problem which brings us to the cons of the next mental health treatment, medication. Medication is great for people who suffer from mental illness that is caused by a physical aspect in the wiring of the brain. Sometimes drugs will be prescribed for a short period of time to correct a problem or they may be prescribed for a lifetime if the problem is something that cannot be corrected but only maintained.

Counseling can cause the patient to relive painful memories and they may become even more depressed than they were before. Counseling is also not 100 percent foolproof when dealing with mental illness and the patient may find themselves back in the chair months or years later with the same problems. Medication comes with side affects and overdoses. Some medications have even been recalled from shelves due to them not being safe and some mental health treatment medications can cause severe reactions in people who already have underlying illnesses or take other medications. There is also the risk that some people may actually become worse by taking certain medications and this can be dangerous to a patient who is already suffering from mental health issues.
