Introduction
With the ever rising cost of getting a college education it is no wonder that many people are turning to college loans to be able to afford their education. The attractive quality of college loans is that there is often times no payment required until six months after you graduate. This is suppose to enable to recent graduate enough time to find a job and begin making income so that they can afford to pay back what they have borrowed in college loans. These are some tips that you should follow in order to make sure you get the loans that are best for you and ensure you are able to manage that debt once you graduate.
Step 1
Looking at federal college loans is usually the most safe and best route for any student to take when considering college loans. These often have significantly lower interest rates than their private counterparts and have limits that help keep you from borrowing more than you need. When getting these loans you will also have to take a small course that gives you knowledge on the borrowing process and lets you know what it will be like once the college loans have reached the repayment stage.
Step 2
Private college loans are another option for the college student. More money can be taken out for this kind of loan and can help to cover the cost of a more expensive college or university. One of the ways that most private loans ensure that the borrower is capable of repaying the loan is by requiring or highly recommending a cosigner before the loan is granted. This is another caution to students because college loans can often not be discharged in bankruptcy and this will leave the borrower and cosigner both responsible for repaying the loan. The interest rates are also often higher and some private college loans require the interest to be paid even while the student is still in college.
Step 3
Scholarships can be a great option for students and they require no payback when the student graduates. Students can often apply for scholarships based on criteria given by the group awarding the scholarship. This can range from the race of the student to the economic status of the student. There is often a scholarship for almost everything and searching for them can be well worth the pay off to the student. There may be a work or essay required to qualify for the scholarship, so don't be afraid to flex your intellectual skills to ensure you are chosen.
Step 4
Grants are given with no need to ever payback the money. The most common of these grants is the pell grant which is given to those needy students to help pay for college. These are a great way to help cover the costs of tuition or classes so that you can leave college with little debt from college loans. Filling out the FAFSA is the best first step to see if you qaulify for grants like this.
Step 5
Payback time is here now and you have either a lot or a little debt from all your college loans. If you are able to find work then it is best to pay back these loans as quickly as possible and get ahead so that if you lose your job in the future you will have no trouble keeping up while you look for work. If you are unable to find work then try to find ways to defer payments or consolidate all your loans. This will help to keep you on track and let the borrowers know you are not simply trying to ignore them.
Tips
College loans should always be taken out with great care. Know how much you need and don't get in over your head simply because the loans don't need to be paid back immediately. If you have to stop college early then you may not have a degree, but the loans will still be there. Talk over all your options with your schools financial aid office to ensure you get exactly what you need.
