Introduction

At one time, no one would have considered pet insurance as an option to the beloved family pet. However, with more diseases attacking the family pet then ever before. This may be an excellent idea and a good purchase.

Some dogs are more apt to have problems than others, for example larger dogs (such as Saint Bernards, Great Pyrenees and other) are more prone to get hip dysplasia which can require several surgeries, cast, medicines and even therapy for your pet to get their limbs moving how they need to be. These types of surgeries can amount up to thousands of dollars that the owner may not have at that time. However, they may be able to afford in increments of $25.00 a month. With more outrageous prices in pet care many owners are considering dog insurance for mans best friend.

History

The history of pet insurance started back in 1980 with the very first policy being sold in 1982. This insurance was designed much like a health policy except it is specific for your pets and covers the often expensive and high-rate fees that would be incurred during vet procedures on your dog.

 

Why do people get dog insurance

Treatments that were at one time only used for humans such as kidney transplants, heart surgeries and chemo treatments, are now available for the household pets. That mean that conditions that were considered to be once fatal are now treatable, but may range from the price range of $4,000 and up.

Vets now have the same access that human doctors do, to machines such as CAT scan machines and MRI machines. These screenings, however more apt to showing the dogs condition but will increase the cost of the exam by at least 50 percent. By having these machines, more pets than ever are able to be saved and treated because these are previous issues that would have gone on untreated without the necessary equipment to provide a full medical exam for the pet.

In 2009 Americans spent about $39.4 billion dollars on their pets with about 28 percent of this being specifically designated toward vet bills and medical care for the family pet. This is a large jump from all the years before.

American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that about 73 million dogs and 83 million cats are kept in homes as pets in America. However, there were only around 800,000 people who held insurance policies for their pets which shows that most people either are unaware that policies such as this exist, or they feel as though they can not afford this dog insurance for the family pet.
