Introduction
Unfortunately, there is no quick credit fix that will instantly raise your credit score. However, there is a credit fix that you can work on over time in order to raise your score. A credit fix is a wise decision, as a low credit score can keep you from being able to buy a home or car, it may even keep you from being able to rent an apartment or get a job. The sooner you begin working on your credit fix, the better. One thing to remember when attempting a credit fix, is that there is no quick way to remove negative marks from your credit report. They remain for a certain number of years. The time when they should come off your report will be listed on your credit report.
History
Getting a copy of your credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies is the first step in your credit fix venture. You are entitled to one free report from each of the agencies per year. Be sure to order all three as they can and often do have different information.
Look over these reports. They will have your personal information, work history and your credit history. Both favorable and unfavorable accounts will be listed. Check each item carefully in order to determine that each item on the report is actually yours.
If you run across something that you believe is in error, you should file a dispute. This can be done by mail or online. You should include information about the account and why you believe that was in error. You should also include copies of any receipts or other documentation that will support your claims. It is free to dispute an item on your credit report. The item will be investigated and if it is found to be in error, it will be removed from your report.
Features
A credit fix that you can do yourself that will help raise your credit score is to pay down your credit card debt. You want your balance to be less than half of your available credit. Avoid charging up your cards, also avoid applying for new cards. Paying down to less than half of what you are able to charge, makes your credit look better.
Learn to wait for items that you want. Make it a point to use cash for purchases instead of putting them on a credit card. Often people get into trouble by using cards for items that they cannot afford. It is better to wait until you can afford to buy what you want.
Tips and comments
When you are disputing an item, always keep a copy of your letter to the credit reporting agencies. Also always send copies of receipts. Keep the originals for your personal files.
Be wary of companies that offer a quick credit fix for a fee. They most likely will be doing the same things that you can do for free and that is disputing items. However, they will not be able to remove valid items. You can file the dispute yourself for free.
