Introduction
It doesn’t matter how old you are, or how young. It doesn’t matter which walk of life you belong to. One thing all critics and stylists agree on is that every woman’s wardrobe needs some basic items. And one must have that they will all swear by is the white shirt. Forever in style, the white shirt gives the perfect touch of elegance with coming off as too formal or too casual. The best part is that it comes in every material, make and style imaginable, and it goes with practically anything.
History
Originally worn by laborers, the traditional blouse (or shirt) is loose-fitting and is typically held at the waist by a belt in order for it to “blouse” (hang loosely over the wearer’s body), hence the name. Originally a French word, “blouse” is used to refer to a woman’s shirt – traditionally one that has an unmistakable feminine style. The blouse was rarely used by women until 1890. The shirt became a part of the wardrobe of the people of the Victorian era, and were used among casual, practical clothes. As women began to join the work force, white shirts were coupled with long skirts and belt as the standard outfit. Embroidered blouses and tucked blouses with pleats became famous in 1910 and were used commonly. Normally made of silk or cotton (though flax and linen have also been used, especially by women inspired by the “Eco movement”), these shirts may or may not be sleeveless and similarly, may or may not have collars. The buttons on these blouses were traditionally, generally reversed from those on shirts for men.
Features
There are several kinds of white shirts in use today, every style providing a new twist added for the modern women looking for something both attractive and practical. Some styles have become immensely popular and critics have heralded them as the best or among the best options for women looking for white blouses. The slimming, classic white shirt leads the rest it seems, with its form fitting cut. Close after are the white shirts with French cuffs and those the more feminine, slimming version of the classic tuxedo shirt with darts and ruffles at the collar. There are also the classic, in formal options that may not be as form fitting as the others but also manage to look amazing when paired up with vets, jackets and sweaters. Short sleeves blouses are also popular, with half, quarter and three quarter sleeves that provide comfort and still manage to look chic. Shirts with plunging neckline covered modestly with the attached ties (tie necks) have also become quite famous. Pleats, embroidery, darts and embellishments are also used regularly. One shirt in particular that has become insanely popular is the Brooks Brothers No Iron shirt- you could wear it straight out of the dryer and it wouldn’t break a crease or need to be ironed.
Tips and comments
No matter what style you prefer, some important factors need to be kept in mind when buying your white shirt. Remember that the shirt should be comfortable - no fashion statement is worth the effort and money if you’re turning blue from lack of air. The material shouldn’t chaff or cause rashes- most people prefer white cotton because it’s the most comfortable. Most importantly, whatever style you choose should suit you, your body type, your personality- after all your wardrobe reflects you- and you should feel amazing in whatever you wear.
