How To Get a Job With Shoes

Introduction

Everyone loves getting a new pair of shoes. Some people even choose to turn their love of shoes and fashion into a job or career. From retail to fashion design, there are many ways to do this.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is to decide what type of job you would like to have. Do you want to sell shoes for a living? Do you want to design shoes for a living? Do you want to work in advertising for a shoe company? The type of job you choose will have a lot to do with what steps you take to become employed. You also need to figure out how far into your chosen field you want to go. Will you be happy working in a retail store for the rest of your life or would you prefer to move up into the corporate office? Do you want to design shoes for other fashion designers or would you prefer to start your own line of shoes and accessories?

 

Step 2

Once you have figured out what kind of job with shoes you would like to have, you will need to find out if you are qualified. Some careers may require you to go to college or have an advanced degree. Others may require you to simply have a high school diploma or pass a drug test. Some require that you have some experience in a related field. The higher the position you are seeking, the more qualifications you will most likely need to possess. 

Step 3

If you decide you would like to take the fashion design route, there are numerous ways to reach your goals. The first and perhaps most important thing you need to do is put together a portfolio with drawings of your ideas. This is necessary to get into a fashion school or to get hired with a fashion design firm. Some people chose to go to fashion school to learn more about the industry, while others decide to take internships, become assistants or try to look for jobs on their own. Just remember that the world of fashion is very competitive. Just because you have big dreams and good ideas, doesn't guarantee you will find your dream job.

 

Step 4

If you decide to take the business or retail route, there are also many ways to get started. Some go right into an entry level job and work hard in an attempt to work their way up to the top. However, some choose to attend college or business school so that they can learn about retail, business, accounting, advertising or management. Some companies may even require higher level executives to have a certain type of degree before they will promote them to the next level, while some prefer that you have so many years of experience.

 

Step 5

If retail or fashion design do not appeal to you, but you would still like to work with shoes, there are a few other options. There are many people who work in the shoe repair trade as cobblers. You can open your own store that sells shoes. Some department stores employ personal shoppers who help customers put together the right outfits for their needs and this involves working with shoes as well. If you can't decide between retail and fashion design, why not try to combine both? Buyers for stores work as a liaison between design firms and the store to help decide what will be sold.

 

Tips

Just remember, no matter what type of job with shoes you aim to get, the most important thing to do is to work hard. Work hard towards your degree, work hard to get a promotion or work hard to see that your shoe designs are getting noticed by the right people. While experience, degrees or a portfolio may be necessary to get where you want to be in your chosen field, they must be accompanied by an excellent work ethic or someone else will always get the job.
