Introduction
Sperry shoes are a brand of boat shoes invented in 1935 by Paul Sperry. Their Top-Spider shoe was the first boat shoe introduced into the market. Sperry shoes are made for both men and women. These days the brand is property of Collective Brands Inc. They use the slogan A Passion for the sea. It was also named the 2009 Brand of the Year by Footwear news.
History
The story of how Sperry shoes came into being is quite interesting. Paul Sperry was an excellent boater and like most boaters he had the problem of slipping on the slippery decks of his boats. He got the idea of the non-slip soles from his cocker spaniels feet. The pattern of grooves and cracks on the dogs feet gave Sperry the idea for the herringbone pattern on the sole of the boot. The shoe quickly became popular among boaters not just because of its non-slip sole but because of the white color as well which didn't leave marks on the boats decks. In 1939, the U.S. navy bought the rights for the shoe to be manufactured for its sailors. The company was bought by the U.S. Rubber Co. as a result.
