The 1960s saw the evolution of many different styles of clothing. It was during this particular period that the old, stereotypical fashion of the 40s and the 50s gave way to more contemporary styles. Fashion is nothing but an interpretation of the mood of the public in general. The styles of clothing say a lot about the mentality of a particular society. The 1960’s was a time when the public sought to break away from the old, dogmatic beliefs that society was wrought with. The people started putting reason over tradition. They explored new vistas of life. They took pride in who they were and became more independent in thought. These trends in society are heavily mirrored in the styles of clothing of the 60s.

History

The 60’s featured a lot of new trends in mentality which was considered to be rebellious in the then conservative society. Individual expression is a much appreciated trait today. However, this was not the case in the 60’s. People belonging to the older generations were resistant to change and furiously antagonized it. However, the young generation could not be suppressed and their beliefs exploded in the form of what we today call modernism. Society saw a complete shift in its ideals. This reflects in the styles of clothing of the period. One of the biggest hallmarks of the styles of clothing of the 60s is the bikini. The bikini was first featured in the American film ‘beach party’ in 1963. Immediately, it took the world by storm. Women and men became obsessed with the bikini and the obsession continues even today – in fact it is even more intense now.

The style of clothing of the 1960s was elegant and sophisticated. Metal accessories became popular to compliment the geometrical shaped dresses of the women. High heels and mini-skirts was another trend developed in 60s. This trend continues to dominate world fashion even today. The mini skirt was introduced in 1964 by the designer Mary Quant. It was an instant hit with young girls. Fake eyelashes were also hot favorites among women.

The general style of clothing of the 60s was aimed to please youngsters. Bold, bright colors were featured instead of the dull colors that dominated the 40s and the 50s. Men wore multicolored ties. Sparkling white suits with matching boots were especially popular. Men also wore tight slacks. The women liked to wear pink, yellow and other colors which were suited to the ‘fresh’ look. Wacky patterns, crazy sunglasses and articulate styles of clothing were much loved by members of both the sexes.
