Dandruff - The Most Disturbing Scalp Diseases

Published at 07/11/2011 19:33:14

There exist many types of scalp diseases. One of them is Seborrheic Dermatitis. In this disease dry, itchy, flaky patches appear on the scalp. Another scalp disease, Neurodermatitis is a condition that starts out as a localized area of itching on an area of the scalp that looks normal. Over a period of time, the itchy spot can enlarge as well as become more and more bothersome. One of the more serious diseases is Psoriasis; this is a skin disease that is characterized by thick silvery scaly areas developing on various parts of the body. The scalp is one of the areas that are frequently affected by psoriasis. Bacterial Folliculitis is also a dangerous scalp disease. It is caused by the over growth of harmful bacteria and in is extremely painful in its worst form. Alopecia Areata is one of the most common scalp diseases. It is characterized by appearance of bald patches on the scalp, which are easily curable, by medical treatment. One of the most disturbing scalp diseases is dandruff.

Dandruff--those dry, white flakes of skin you constantly find yourself brushing off your collar or shoulders -- poses no health risk whatsoever. But it can be a source of embarrassment, and the itchiness that may come with it is a genuine nuisance. The word dandruff is of Anglo-Saxon origin, a combination of 'tan' meaning 'tetter' and 'drof' meaning 'dirty'.  Dandruff scale is a cluster of corneocytes, which have retained a large degree of cohesion with one another and detach as such from the surface of the stratum corneum. The size and abundance of scales are varied from one site to another and over time. Skin cells that grow and die off too fast are the cause of dandruff, but doctors do not know why this happens. One possible cause is a fat-eating fungus called Pityrosporum ovale, which is present in most people but to excess in dandruff sufferers. This abundance of fungus in some can be due to infrequent shampooing, hormonal fluctuations, and certain neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease, a weakened immune system, and stress.

Dandruff is very easily curable and can be treated by even simple home remedies. The use of anti-dandruff shampoos, anti fungus shampoos and specific hair oils can also heal dandruff. Another helpful solution is eating nutritional foods. Fruits and juices can resist the occurrence of dandruff. Treatments like meditation and yoga help the body and mind to relax which in turn leads to reduction of stress. By reducing stress also we could control the skin from flaking. By consulting a skin specialist or a physician you could take certain oral medicines and drugs, which could help treat dandruff. Various homemade natural treatments are available for curing dandruff. These can be easily done at home and help keep dandruff at bay when done at regular intervals. It is strongly recommended that proteins should be avoided, along with tea or coffee.

Tips and comments:

Thus, dandruff control is really easy, only if you take the right measures. It is not serious, so it should not upset the people who are affected by it. I would recommend that anti-dandruff shampoos shouldn’t be over-used as they aren’t always effective and often lead to hair problems like split-ends, hair fall etc. However, home remedies are always more effective and safe. They are trusted and reliable. That is why they should be preferred over chemical usage and drugs.
