Introduction
Early detection and diagnosis of colon cancer is crucial and can definitely improve chances of survival. If detected early enough it is often treated with success. If any of the symptoms of colon cancer are being experienced it is of utmost importance to visit your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
History
There are several screening tests that your healthcare provider will want to perform on a patient to be able to determine whether the patient actually has cancer of the colon. Some of those tests may include:
Sigmoidoscopy
Colonoscopy
Barium Enema with double contrast
Cat scan Colonoscopy
The healthcare provider will be the one who determines what testing will be performed on the cancer patient in order to detect, diagnose and treat the patient if cancer of the colon is found.
It is extremely important to cooperate with your healthcare provider and make sure you are present for each test they wish to perform and always follow any directions they give you in order to prep for the testing.
Features
Cancer of the colon has a few different symptoms and symptoms may vary from patient to patient depending on how advanced the cancer of the colon may be. Just because a patient is experiencing some of the symptoms does not mean they have colon cancer, but it is always best to consult your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following symptoms:
Any changes in bowel habits that may include constipation or diarrhea that last more than a few days.
A feeling that could include the need to have a bowel movement but relief is not experienced when doing so.
Dark stool, rectal bleeding or appearance of blood in your stool.
Cramping or abdominal pain.
Losing weight when you didn’t intend to, weakness and/fatigue.
Those are the primary symptoms of cancer of the colon; however, if you are experiencing any or all of the above or any additional symptoms that you feel are not normal, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider.
There may or may not be other symptoms involved in cancer of the colon. Each person is different and not all people will display the same symptoms. The most important thing to realize is that you know your body better than anyone else does and it is up to you to recognize when something isn’t right. It is up to you to take action and get yourself taken care of. Regular screenings for cancer of the colon are something you should consider as well.
The worst thing you can do is panic if you happen to experience any of the symptoms of colon cancer. It cannot be stressed enough how very important it is to see your healthcare provider as soon as possible if you suspect you may have cancer of the colon or any other disease.
People oftentimes delay a visit or have the attitude that the symptoms and discomfort will go away. This is sometimes the case, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry and consult with your doctor immediately. Early detection is a key factor in being able to receive the successful treatment you would need for cancer of the colon.
If your symptoms lead to a confirmed diagnosis it is always important to make sure you follow any and all directions you may receive from your healthcare provider. Remember they are there to help you and want to see you healthy, happy and cancer free.
