Introduction

Nowadays, with the increasing popularity of “Go Green” and “Save Planet Earth” campaigns, it has become necessary for people to learn about environmental management. Since past couple of centuries, irrational human activities have been causing adverse effects on ecosystem and environment. Consequently, the natural balance between flora and fauna is disrupted, conventional sources of energy are starting to diminish, species are nearing endangerment and toxic substances are being added to our ecosystem. Thus, the main focus of environmental management is to restore natural conditions. The term includes environmental conservation, judicious use of natural resources, sustainable development and elimination of negative factors.

History

This concept has been introduced by government of different nations, in schools and offices.

Management At Corporate Level:
An advanced, high-tech form of management has been introduced at workplaces. It’s observed by most multi-national companies. Termed as Corporate environmental management, the process basically focuses on improving upon the performance of environment, meeting business objectives while complying with environmental standards. The main focus of this program is to ensure that eco-friendly systems are installed in office building so as to sculpt down expenditures plus, to conserve power and natural resources.

Management At School Level:
Government of different countries has made provisions for school-going children to learn about conservational practices. Environmental science has been made a compulsory subject at school and college levels. Basic courses involving sustainable development are introduced for children. Toddlers are encouraged to participate in waste recycling, tree plantation and sewage water treatment processes. Monthly projects are handed out to children so that they can come up with creative designs based on alternate sources of energy.

Management At Personal Level:
Everyone’s responsible for contributing their bit to environmental management. Little steps could bring about tremendous changes to society. Therefore, several awareness programs are started by NGOs to make people familiar with their responsibilities.

Features

At domestic level, we can conserve environment by:

  1. Reducing power consumption.
  2. Cutting down fuel usage.
  3. Safe disposal of waste.
  4. Use of organic products instead of chemicals.
  5. Reusing and recycling waste materials.
  6. Rain water harvesting.
  7. Solar power applications.
  8. Using organic compost and mulches to support plant growth.

Management At Social Level:
Human beings are socially responsible for their actions. We can promote the growth of environment at social levels by caring for other vulnerable species of our ecosystem and by making efforts for rising awareness in remote areas and uneducated sections of society.

Tips and comments

Every year, government introduced large projects to ensure environmental management at national and international levels. Recently, most countries have launched the concept of installing wind farms (for tapping in wind energy), Solar cells, solar heaters and solar cookers (for converting solar energy into electrical energy or heat), hydroelectric plants (to generate electricity from running water), geothermal projects (to extract energy from earth core). All these projects focus on extracting maximum out of environment and giving it maximum in return. Thus, by adopting the sustainable way of living, we can secure lives of our future generations.
